Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes the paint stick to the paper?
To prevent the paint from just running off the surface of the paper, we must first treat it with a solution of alum dissolved in water. This solution is sponged onto the paper and left to absorb. The alum crystals deposited onto the paper surface interact with the paint making it jellify and cling to the paper.

- What makes the paint float?
The paint floats because it has been thinned down and dropped onto a thickened water surface. Water was traditionally thickened with Carrageen moss, gum tragacanth or psyillum seed but now Carrageen is used (often in prepared powder form called Carrageenan) or modern cellulose powders such as methyl cellulose (often called methocel) and carboxymethylcellulose (also known as CMC).

- Why do the colours not mix and make a mess on the surface?
The paints don't mix due to surface tension which keeps successive drops from mixing with those already on the tray.
